Raccoons are sneaky, sneaky critters. Hidden by darkness. During the night they look for food. Moving around between dens. If this is happening on your property it can become a nuisance. Maybe they’re in your attic or ripping up your lawn. The first things we research are home raccoon prevention and removal remedies. There are plenty of theories online. But, not all are guaranteed successful.
Theories why ammonia works
When searching for raccoon repellents there are a variety of options. One that commonly appears is ammonia. It can be used by dousing it around directly or soaking rags. By strategically placing the powerful scented chemical around raccoon hotspots, the hope is that you will deter them from getting into your garbage or attic.
Raccoons usually don’t pee in their main bedding area, though they are happy to do so elsewhere inside an attic. Ammonia is one of the chemicals found in urine. The smell of ammonia is said to trick raccoons into thinking the area is soiled. Then, they will move on thinking the den or food source is ruined.
Ammonia is a very short-term solution
But, these animals are too smart. In many cases they’ll find a way to avoid the smell. Either moving the ammonia soaked rags away from the food source or den site orr waiting until it’s dried and the offensive odours dissipates. Placing ammonia in or around garbage will only deter raccoons for a short amount of time.
Ammonia soaked rags in your attic will do very little to prevent raccoons from denning there. Generally, your attic is big enough for the raccoons to settle in a corner furthest from the smell. Don’t forget the smell will decrease. It’ll dry up and you still have raccoons in your home. To have the appropriate amount and consistency to keep raccoons away you would have to use so much ammonia that your house would be contaminated. The chemical poses significant health concerns to humans as well.
