The last step in Skedaddle’s process is to secure your home against future skunk intrusions by installing a physical barrier between skunks and your deck or shed. In most urban areas of North America, there are an estimated 5-50 skunks per square kilometer, meaning they will always be in our communities looking for a place to stay. Skunks will choose the path of least resistance, and our prevention process creates a path that no skunks can get through, forcing them to return to one of their multiple den sites in the area.
With over 30 years of experience our trained technicians can spot and secure the most vulnerable entry points on your property, and by using our heavy-gauge galvanized steel screening, we can deter even the most determined skunk from your home. The best way to ensure your home is safe from future invasions is to prevent skunks’ ability to enter in the first place.
Where Are Skunk Entry Points?
Skunks are clever and determined animals, which often requires an all or nothing approach to prevention. Most often the entire perimeter of your deck or shed must be secured with heavy-gauge galvanized steel screening to prevent skunk reentry. Patching the current entry point alone will not keep them out as they will simply move a few feet over and dig right back in where you’ve not defended. By screening the entire underside of the structure there will be no place for them to re-enter.
Once our technicians have determined the amount of vulnerable area that needs to be protected, they will take on the hard work of handing digging a trench along the perimeter of the structure to install the barrier. Depending on the type of soil, the trench will measure 8-12 inches deep and 12-16 inches wide. A heavy-gauge steel screen is then installed into the trench in an ‘L’ shape, extending the screen away from the structure. By extending the screen outward, we are able to prevent skunks from digging underneath the barrier.
The screen is then secured to the bottom of the structure and the trench is back filled with soil leaving behind little to no evidence that we were ever there. We’ll take the time to protect plants, flowers and shrubs and clean up the work site when we’re finished.
When the skunks attempt to return to your property, they will not be able to get past our screening, and will have to return to one of their other den sites. Skunks have multiple den sites within a community, meaning they will be able to seek safety and shelter elsewhere immediately after they are removed from your property.
