The world around us is a precious thing. We are surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna, especially here in Wisconsin. Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, the Milwaukee team and the teams at our other locations, believe it is everyone’s duty to help keep wildlife habitats clean and safe. The natural world is more delicate than you may realize. The more we do now, the better the future will be for us and our co-inhabitants of the earth.
What’s Happening in the Milwaukee Area
Perhaps the most notable environmental issue in the area recently has been the Milwaukee Estuary. This is the meeting point of several tributaries leading into Lake Michigan. Unfortunately, the area has been polluted with sediment contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyl, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals.
These pollutants affect more than just water. The fish, animals and plants that live around the estuary are also harmed by this.
Even dating back to the early settlement of Wisconsin, there have been problems with overuse and abuse of natural resources. The Department of Natural Resources was created in 1915 to help address issues such as deforestation. In short, without being cautious, we run the risk of severely damaging the world around us.
Why It Matters
Wisconsin has some truly beautiful natural resources. With different habitats such as wooded hills, valleys, creeks, the lakeshore and much more, there is a lot to love about the Badger State. When these resources are used up, they will likely be gone for good. While we can plant new trees and try to redevelop habitats, redeveloping the complex ecosystems around us is challenging. Without a concerted effort to protect and expand the habitats around us, it is easy to allow them to decay.
Not only are we risking the lives and well-being of the wildlife around us, a grave ethical concern, but we are also risking our own lifestyles as well. Most immediately obvious, many of us enjoy going outside, green spaces, national and state parks and swimming and recreation in the lake. Furthermore, billions of people around the world live with unclean water and air. While this is not the case for Wisconsinites, if we do not protect our natural resources, it could easily become the case. As was identified by our ancestors in 1915, we need to work to ensure our state continues to be a beautiful and bountiful place to live and work.
What’s Being Done
Fortunately, many people and organizations are concerned about the impact humane society has on the natural world. The Milwaukee Estuary is listed as a Great Lakes Area of Concern. This means that it is a focal point of environmental protection efforts.
In March 2020, the Wisconsin DNR and the Environmental Protection Agency partnered to help provide resources and initiatives to clean up the area. The ultimate goal is to reach the criteria to delist the estuary as an area of concern. This includes significantly reducing the polluted sediment. This effort’s goals are to enhance fish and wildlife habitats and populations, improve water quality and cut back pollution in the estuary and lake. This most recent partnership reflects how seriously the state and federal government believes in protecting our natural resources.
