February is the month of love. It’s also a bunch of other things, so look it up.

One thing about the month of February is how busy we can be with the arrivals of squirrel and raccoon babies. It’s something we can pretty much set our clocks to, that by the end of the month we will see new offspring for these critters, and a host of new problems for unsuspecting homeowners.

We start getting calls from people who describe noises like “fighting” and “it’s like a party happening up there!”. Although raccoons are definitely known to party, its more likely they are mating (and leaving behind more than a few red Solo cups)..

This can cause a lot of problems for the unlucky homeowner who unwittingly is playing host to the wildlife mating den. There can be blood, feces, insulation damage, structural damage and other destructive activities.

Some tips for homeowners during February and March:

• Call a reputable wildlife company if you are hearing activity in attics, under porches, etc.
• Inspect the exterior of your home to ensure there are no loose shingles, siding, gaps in bricks or other areas that may be vulnerable to a wildlife intrusion
• Temperatures are falling well below 0 degrees by this point, so it is very likely mice, squirrels, raccoons and skunks will try to infiltrate your home
