As far as rodents go, the city of Milwaukee has had its fair share of issues. Many residents are no strangers to the call for mice removal from their commercial and residential properties. The state of Wisconsin has three native rodents, the House Mouse, Deer Mouse, and the Norway Rat. All three rodents frequent urban and suburban areas and are nocturnal by nature.
Getting to Know Milwaukee’s Mice
Milwaukee’s House Mouse is coated with a grey to light brown fur and has its underbelly coated with light brown fur. Its ears and eyes are small and it is color blind. This is an omnivorous mouse as its diet comprises a variety of fruits, nuts, seeds and grains and meat occasionally makes it onto this rodent’s meal list. This mouse is attracted to human spaces due to the plethora of food they provide.
The Deer Mouse is golden brown with white chest and legs. This mouse has prominent eyes and like the House Mouse, it too is color blind. This mouse’s diet includes insects, seeds, nuts, grains, and fruits. Unlike the other two rodent species, the Deer Mouse prefers to live outdoors and will only attempt to move into buildings when the food sources on the outside become scarce or if the weather becomes unbearable for them.
The Norway Rat has a gray or white chest but the remainder of its body is covered in a coarse mixture of brown and black fur. Like the other two, this rodent is also color blind (if you’re like us, you’re probably wondering Hey? Does Wisconsin have the proverbial ‘three blind mice’?). These rodents are picky eaters and will not attempt to taste anything that is new to them. They habitually consume fish, grains, nuts, and meat and prefer their food to be unspoiled.
Mice Inside a Milwaukee Property
Regardless of the subspecies they belong to, mice spell trouble for property owners, especially when they get indoors. They damage the inside of buildings as they shred parts to make their nests. Their urine and droppings create wood rot while staining walls and ceilings. Additionally, their biological waste harbors diseases such a leptospirosis. The noise they make as they scurry about at night will also cause discomfort for people who use the building.
Since mice are usually attracted by food, limiting their access may reduce your exposure to invasion. You can do this by reducing or eliminating garbage piles and ensuring that garbage that must be stored (especially garbage that contains food that mice will eat) is secured in rodent-proof containers.
