SKUNK REMOVAL PROCESS

ASSESS AND REMOVE

Assess and Remove

To solve a skunk problem, we start with a complete assessment of your property to determine where the skunks are living and how they’re gaining access. Since skunks do not climb our inspection will focus on the ground level den sites like porches, decks and sheds. We then perform a careful and humane removal, including any babies.

Clear and Clean

Once we humanely remove any skunks and their babies we will move on to clearing the den site of any damaged property, nesting material or debris that was gathered by the animals. We can then begin cleaning, disinfecting and deodorizing the area to eliminate any risk of illness, irritating odors and attractants for other wildlife.

PREVENT AND PROTECT

Prevent and Protect

To prevent a future skunk problem, our technicians will get to work installing protective barriers designed to keep skunks out. This usually involves digging out around the perimeter of the deck, shed or porch and burying a heavy steel mesh deep into the ground. Our workmanship and materials are backed by a lifetime warranty.

PG County provides wildlife like skunks with bountiful food sources and shelter. Areas like Patuxent Research Refuge ensure that local communities’ ecosystems remain healthy, which allows for skunks to succeed in every corner of the county. Once these striped creatures find their way onto a property, they often take up residence in the convenient denning locations our sheds, decks and porches provide. However, just like any other area, its abundant wildlife can pose a challenge for its residents. Skunks can not only be a nuisance, they can only create potential hazards on your property.

Skunk Problems in Prince George's County

Much like every other mammal, skunks have the potential to carry and transmit rabies. In 2020, the Crater Health District found a rabid skunk in Prince George County. Again in 2022, the Prince George’s Health Department discovered a skunk that tested positive for rabies, after it bit a dog despite not being threatened. Although the number of infected skunks is typically smaller throughout Maryland than other local mammals such as bats and raccoons, skunks can always have the potential to carry and transmit rabies. It is important to always maintain distance from skunks in order to avoid potential infection. Skedaddle technicians have skilled training to properly remove wildlife without spreading viruses like rabies to other mammals.

Skunks might not be everyone’s favorite animal, but they do play an important role in our ecosystem. They are omnivores, which means they eat a variety of plants and animals, keeping the food chain in balance. Additionally, skunks are beneficial for soil health as they dig up insects and aerate the ground with their claws. They also help control populations of rodents that would otherwise damage crops. So, next time you catch a whiff of a skunk’s spray, remember that these stinky critters are doing their part to keep everything in order within their ecosystem.

However, finding one on your property can be unnerving, and discovering that the skunk has moved into your home can be downright alarming. Large backyards and small backyards, and farm fields across PG County are inviting for these hungry and opportunity creatures. Skunks are attracted to our homes for a few reasons, including the promise of easy access to food waste, the need for shelter, or the desire to establish their den.

Understanding how skunks behave and why they might find our homes appealing is crucial to preventing encounters and keeping ourselves and our property safe. Start by keeping your property clean and free of any food debris that could be tempting to these furry scavengers. After all, if skunks think there’s an all-you-can-eat buffet in your backyard, they’ll be more likely to stick around.

But it’s not just about food – you also need to make sure your home is sealed off from any possible entrances, such as crawl spaces or gaps in the foundation. These furry friends are experts at squeezing their way into tight spaces, so don’t give them an opportunity to make themselves at home. Construction styles in larger cities such as Bowie and College Park will face the same issues as the homes built in older communities like Eagle Harbor or Queen Anne. As opportunistic creatures, skunks will dig under a variety of different homes, despite the architectural styles or age. With a little bit of effort and precaution, you can keep your property skunk-free and ensure that these striped creatures stay where they belong – in the great outdoors.
